A friend just brought to my attention this group on Facebook, called “Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene! (Official petition to Facebook)”. According to the group Facebook considers pictures of breastfeeding “obscene” (apparently it is more obscene to feed a child then allow them to go hungry and starve) and are removing the pictures and warning the mothers not to repost them.

 

I don’t know about you but, in my opinion I’m shocked that in the 21^st century that anyone could think that a photo of a woman nursing her child is indecent exposure or at least a matter of dispute. It’s not “obscene” when adults eat, so why should it be any different for babies? Seriously, what is wrong with our culture that breastfeeding is considered inappropriate to be seen in public?  There are places all over the globe where people are struggling to feed their children properly, and here in one of the richest nations on earth, we consider the ability to do so “obscene”? How the hell does that make sense? If people can't get past the idea of a baby doing what is natural to them – nursing – then they really need to grow the fuck up.

 

What really gets me is the fact that every day was as society we are constantly exposed to images of war - demolished buildings, fleeing refugees, wounded civilians - and never think to be offended or react to those images as "gross". Nothing about war, famine, destruction, blood or death is shocking to society. But by god if a woman chooses to breast-feed her baby in public it is a moral travesty! I’m not saying that pictures of war should be censored, I’m just saying that they’re not the most stomach pleasing pic’s to see, on the other hand a picture of a mother breast-feeding is quite natural and should remind us all of the beauty of life.

 

If anything is disturbing about pictures of women breast-feeding then it is the people out there who are perverted enough to sexualize a mother feeding her. Anyone who feels that a photo of a mother breastfeeding her child is "sexual" or "obscene" has some real issues – I don’t know about you, but a photo featuring a baby just about kills the "sex" factor for me.  When the hell is are people, and in particular those at Facebook, going to get it that there is nothing obscene about a mother nursing her child? Better yet, if you find it obscene, can you clue me in why?

Hi Wendy.. it beats me why.. We can have uncovered breasts all over the place and more.. and not bat an eye.. but when a mother feeds her baby suddenly people notice DUH??
Most mother's actually can feed quite discreetly anyway I even did it in church.. Hmm.. even there you get looks you can never win.. Mother's don't go out there to show people their stuff or that babies can hang off them in public.. They are just feeding thier little ones the most natural thing in the world.. LOL.. I love the comment about seeing a baby and killing the sex factor... Having kids.. babies etc.. certainly changes that whole area the tiredness alone can kill the whole concept for a while.. I have to smile though when we do have time to ourselves.. our kids are like that is so gross.. well for us it is.... Must be getting to old for all that hey.. LOL.. Ah well I guess that is a whole nother post..
