With headlines (like the one above which was in today’s edition of the Edmonton Sun), you’d think that it’s currently legal to drive while high or stoned in Canada. Well sorry to be a buzz kill, but it never was legal to drive while on drugs. Section 253 (a) of the Criminal Code of Canada states that it is an offence for anyone to operate a motor vehicle, vessel, aircraft or railway equipment while his or her ability to operate it is impaired by alcohol or drugs.

So what the hell is up with the headline? you might be asking yourself. It’s just Stephan (a.k.a. “Steve” or “Satan”) Harper pulling a press conference together to pretend that he’s doing something productive in office instead of just killing people who live in Afghanistan. Stephan Harper said at the press conference yesterday that he’s introducing new legislation to give police officers more “powerful tools” to identify and arrest drivers who are high on drugs. Although, what those “powerful tools” are exactly, no one seems to know. The article says that there is currently no suitable test in Canada to test for drug impairment. So what the hell does Stephan plan on doing, equipping police officers with syringes so they can give people suspected of drug use a blood test? Even then, what if the person got high 3 days before, wouldn't that show up on the blood test too? How can they be sure the person used drugs that night?
It’s not that I don’t support the legislation – as most people know I love my pot. I inhale. I exhale, then I inhale again. I’ll even drink the bong water if the mood is right – but that doesn’t mean I support people driving stoned (killing people in car accidents are a bad buzz), but I don’t think this legislation was thought out at all or that it’ll even pan out.
